Frequently Asked Questions about YMCA Summer Camps

Thank you for your interest in our summer camps. The YMCA of Greater Brandywine has eight summer camp locations across Chester County. Below, you'll find a list of frequently asked questions about our summer camps. Additional information is available in our Parent Handbook.

What are the Camp hours? / Can I drop my child off at any time?

Full-day camps run from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM.

Half-day camp programs run 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM and 1:00 - 4:00 PM. Lunch bunch is available for families looking to participate in two half-day camps.

Before and After Camp Time - If you need to drop your child(ren) off early or pick up later, the YMCA offers Before and After Camp Time from 7:00 - 9:00 AM and 4:00 - 6:00 PM at no additional cost!

If for some reason you are running late, please contact the camp director or camp office, so the staff is aware and someone will be able to check your child in when you arrive. PLEASE be aware on certain field trip days drop off and pick up times may vary from the normal day and those times would not be flexible, as bussing is involved.

Can I walk my child into camp or go in to pick up my child?

Pick up and drop off routines vary by location. Your camp director will communicate the specifics of the camp you have chosen.

However, at every camp, children are checked in with a staff member and pick up requires an authorized adult to show a photo ID before the child is released.

What should my child bring to camp?

Dress for the weather and LABEL all your child’s belongings.

  • Lunch – peanut-free (for full-day campers) (Lunch is provided for campers at the Brandywine YMCA)
  • Snack
  • Water bottle
  • Bathing suit and towel
  • Sneakers and socks
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug spray
  • Appropriate attire for camp

No electronics or money. The use of cell phones, cameras or other electronic devices during program hours is prohibited. Such equipment, if present, will be asked to be put away or confiscated and returned at the end of the day. We want your children to get the most out of their time at camp.

Will sunscreen be applied to my child?

Sunscreen should be applied before your child arrives at camp. Reapplication of sunscreen occurs before and after swim times, and/or as needed. Children are encouraged to apply their own sunscreen, but staff will assist as needed.

Is there refrigeration available for my child’s lunch?

Campers should pack a nut-free lunch and snack that do not need refrigeration. Most camps do not have refrigeration availability for lunches. Check with your camp director for the specifics of your camp.

Will my child learn to swim?

Daily swim lessons are provided at Camp UMLY for all campers enrolled in Woodsy’s Pals, Pathfinders and Trailblazers.

Lessons are not offered as a part of camp at other locations; however, campers enjoy a recreational swim period or two each day (except some field trip days), weather permitting. Your camp director will give you specific scheduling information for your camp.

Trained Y lifeguards conduct swim tests for all campers prior to swimming each week to ensure the safety of all children. Campers receive a red (beginner), yellow (intermediate) or green (competent) band to signify their level.

Those attending camp at the Y have the opportunity to register for swim lessons during camp or after camp time, depending on your location. Check here for more information on swim lessons.

Are there lifeguards at the pool when they have swim time?

Whenever the pools are open, there are lifeguards on duty, as well as counselors keeping an extra eye on the campers.

What training to the staff members/counselors receive?

All staff is required to complete a thorough screening process and 30-plus hours of training, including first aid and CPR.

Have additional questions? Contact the camp director at the camp location you'd like to attend.
