21 million Americans don't know they have diabetes, are you one of them?

During National Diabetes Awareness Month, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine Association is encouraging residents of to learn their risks for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, and to take preventive steps to potentially reduce their chances of developing the disease.

Statistics for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that one in four Americans (86 million people) have prediabetes, up from 79 million in 2010. Prediabetes is a condition in which a person’s blood glucose is elevated, but not high enough for a diabetes diagnosis. Only 10 percent of those with prediabetes know they have it but with awareness and simple actions, people with prediabetes may prevent the onset of diabetes.

Reduce your risk!

Making some basic lifestyle changes that contribute to weight loss and healthy living can decrease the risk for type 2 diabetes. Among these are:

  • Eat fruits and vegetables every day.
  • Choose fish, lean meats and poultry without skin.
  • Aim for whole grains with every meal.
  • Be moderately active at least 30 minutes per day five days a week.
  • Choose water to drink instead of beverages with added sugar.
  • Speak to your doctor about your diabetes risk factors, especially if you have a family history or are overweight.

To assess your risk and learn more about prevention, visit the American Diabetes Association's My Health Advisor to take the quiz!

You're Wellness Wednesday at the Y!

Want to learn more ways to improve your health and the health of your family? Visit one of the YMCA of Greater Brandywine’s eight participating branches on the second Wednesday of September and November this year for helpful information about health and wellness topics. These events are free and open to all members of the community

Featuring a morning and afternoon informational session, each branch offers something different. On September 9, childhood health and wellness topics will be featured. Branches will host local health experts who will provide educational information about many important aspects of children’s health from packing a healthy lunch and exercise to nourishing snacks for your teen and how to prevent sports injuries. There will be games, dances and demos for all to enjoy.

Our children are our future and with childhood obesity on the rise, it’s vital to get the information you need so your child can live a healthy life. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), childhood obesity has more than tripled in both children and adolescents over the past 30 years. Being obese or overweight increase the odds of being diagnosed with diabetes type 2, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and mental health issues.

Head out to your local Y branch on Wednesday, September 9 for this free community event and find out what you can do to insure your child’s health for tomorrow.
