Adapted Programs

The YMCA of Greater Brandywine’s commitment to providing programs for every member of the community is especially evident in our SNAP program. We offer a variety of high-quality, inclusive programs for both adults and children with special needs. These programs provide the opportunity to build healthy minds, bodies and spirits as well as promote pride and success for children and adults with physical, cognitive or developmental challenges. Led by specially trained and highly qualified team members, participants learn confidence, responsibility and independence in a supportive, nurturing environment. SNAP programs encourage socialization, new friendships and teach how to work collaboratively with others while developing important character traits. 

Aquatics

Y Knot Otters: A fun, non-competitive aquatics program for children with developmental challenges. Explore abilities, develop skills and find the confidence to pursue goals. Everyone is assessed prior to placement on the team. Offered at Upper Main Line YMCA and West Chester Area YMCA.

SNAP Aqua: An aquatic fitness program designed for youth, ages 5 to 21, with special needs. The program will focus on enhancing the participants gross motor development, cognitive development, group interaction skills, and overall physical fitness. Offered at the Jennersville YMCA. 

SNAP Swim Lessons: Now offering private swim lessons and personal training. Offered at the Jennersville YMCA and Kennett Area YMCA.

SNAP Swim Team: This fun, non-competitive aquatics program is for children with developmental challenges. Explore abilities, develop skills and find the confidence to pursue goals. Everyone is assessed prior to placement on the team. Offered at the Kennett Area YMCA.

Performing Arts

Music Adventure: A great introduction to music for children with a variety of learning abilities. This class, led by a trained music therapist and behavior specialist, incorporates a variety of musical genres. We explore new instruments and sounds, while further developing your child’s social, motor, and language skills. Offered at the Upper Main Line YMCA.

Theatre: The Jennersville Theatre is an all inclusive program for children, teens and adults. Persons with special needs can perform or work in all aspects of theatre production. Offered at the Jennersville YMCA and Upper Main Line YMCA. 

Sports & Fitness

Progressive Fitness: A fitness program to introduce to health and wellness in our state-of-the-art Wellness Centers. Each participant receives an individual assessment of their personal fitness needs. Together, we’ll build flexibility, balance and heart health using proven exercise techniques. We will also talk about the importance of proper gym etiquette and hydration. Offered at the Upper Main Line YMCA.

SNAPShots: Children with special needs are introduced to a variety of sports, with a new sport being introduced every eight weeks. Children get excited about playing sports with friends and our peer volunteers. They build self-esteem, improve coordination, motor skills and are a part of a team in a low stress environment. Offered at the Upper Main Line YMCA. 

SNAP Fit: A fitness program designed children, teens and young adults with special needs. This program will focus on enhancing each participants gross motor development, cognitive development, group interaction skills and overall physical fitness.

Sensory Movement: Through active movement and playful activities, children with special needs have the opportunity to increase fine and gross motor skills, explore their senses, and work on muscle tone, balance, and social skills. Offered at the Upper Main Line YMCA.

Bowling League: Spend the night bowling with friends! Every Tuesday night 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Register online or at member services at the Upper Main Line YMCA. 

Social

Circle of Friends: Children will have fun exploring the Y’s various enrichment programs as they participate in sports classes, arts and crafts, music lessons, nature activities and more.

Inclusive LEGO: LEGO has been at the core of create play, exploration, and learning for decades. This program is open to children of all learning abilities, and focuses on design elements, fun play and motor function. The program promotes inclusivity, imagination and creativity. Offered at the Jennersville YMCA and Upper Main Line YMCA.

Open Doors: An interactive, fun and social oriented programs designed for adults. Spend the evening at the Kennett Y, Lionville Community Y or Upper Main Line Y playing games, dancing, creating arts and crafts or exercising. Take field trips to the movies, plays, restaurants and more. Open Doors at Kennett is from 6 - 8 pm on Friday evenings.  Call after 3:00 pm on Fridays to check arrival/departure times and confirm activities. 

SNAP Young Adult: This is a multi-dimensional program for young adults with developmental disabilities. Engage with peers in social events and fun Y activities. Currently offered at the West Chester Area YMCA and Oscar Lasko YMCA and Childcare Center.
